Company
Thomas Brown Shopfitters opened its doors for business in December 1980 in a small factory at Mt Nebo, 25km west of Brisbane, Queensland.
Background
To begin with Tom managed, consulted, designed, constructed and installed all projects to come his way. It only took about three months before Tom looked to employ his first employees. One of the original employees is still with Tom today and co-ordinates all site and factory work.
Initial Projects
Primarily, initial projects were of a domestic nature and for clients that operated small businesses. Reliability and an eye for quality paid dividends for Tom and his now blossoming business. The same clients began to contract Thomas Brown Shopfitters to design and fit out their businesses, originally Newsagents and business dwellings. Over time the order of natural progression developed Thomas Brown Shopfitters into a specialist shop fitting company.
These Newsagency projects lead to further prospects when Golden Casket Lotteries introduced it's first corporate image in 1990. The number of Newsagency projects generated with the implementation of this corporate image allowed Tom to introduce a plastics fabrication department to compliment the booming joinery department. This levered Thomas Brown Shopfitters into a leading position with a very competitive edge over competitors. In house fabrication resulted in cost control and most importantly quality control.
Business Growth
Further growth came in the form of referral business. Pharmacy groups Greenspot Chemist and Sunshine Pharmacies approached Tom in the early 1980's seeking Thomas Brown's quality shopfitting service.
Tom developed this side of the business to become the specialist pharmacy design and construct service that is widely sort after today, fitting out most banner group Pharmacies.
The Newsagency side of the business was boosted again when Golden Casket Lotteries introduced its second-generation corporate image in late 1997. Thomas Brown Shopfitters is recognised throughout the Newsagency industry for its commitment to providing high levels of service and satisfaction to existing and potential clients alike.
Innovation & Technologies
Tom recognised early in the life of Thomas Brown Shopfitters the advantage of having a designer on staff. The ability to provide a consultancy and design service for clientele opened many doors and is still recognised for Tom's expertise. The days of the drawing board and tracing film have disappeared in favour of computers and the latest software. This innovation has lead to the precise nature of the shop fitting industry today with retail environments being constructed to tight tolerances.
Computers have become an essential tool. With the designer's input they can accurately predict and assist in solving problems, avoiding costly site mistakes.
Outside the specialist arena of Pharmacies and Newsagencies Thomas Brown Shopfitters have been contracted for many varied commercial projects including: doctors rooms and surgeries, dental surgeries and other professional offices, hair and beauty salons, boutique jewellers, ice cream kiosks and coffee shops and the occasional domestic project for existing clients. Tom believes "no job is too small and all clients should be entitled to the same level of service and attention."
Tom's vision for the future of Thomas Brown Shopfitters is to continue to service the existing niche markets along with the existing clients and to expand into new markets, developing and adapting to new challenges. |
